Tonight I went to dinner with a lifelong friend. We are both thirty, and still feel like we are figuring out life in so many ways. I know with great certainty that if I had the choice: I would have bypassed every place of pain that shaped my character. I would have avoided every area of stress that stretched my heart. I would have bowed out of all the brokenness that brought me closer to Christ. I would have fixed all the problems that made me seek greater wisdom. I would have answered all the questions that ultimately assured my faith. In short, I would have avoided everything difficult to live in greater comfort, and in doing so, I would be living in shallow ease instead of deep trust and love for Christ.
