Tonight, President Obama offered a reasoned and compelling speech about why he plans to issue executive action to provide relief and accountability for millions of immigrants in this country. The Presidents plan is not amnesty. Rather, it offers individuals the opportunity to pay taxes and become contributing members of our society. It also focuses our enforcement efforts on felons, not families. His announcement tonight gives millions of people the peace of mind that they will spend the holidays with their families free from the fear of deportation. Every President since Dwight Eisenhower has issued executive action to influence immigration policy. President is simply following in their footsteps and exercising his legal authority. It is also important to remember that the President was compelled to act due to a lack of leadership from Republican leaders in the House. They have failed to take up the bipartisan immigration bill that was passed by the Senate over a year ago. The Presidents plan is a temporary solution, and it remains incumbent on Republicans in the House to pass a long term legislative solution. I hope that the Presidents actions are the impetus Republicans need to do their job and get to work. Its time for them to show leadership without the threat of a government shutdown. Its time for Congress to do its job.
