Tonight The Groovinators are at Headlands Coffeehouse for our bi-monthly second Thursday engagement, then tomorrowo evening I am back at Luna Trattoria, so this has been a busy week. On Monday I drove out to Willits to Dorian Mays house to rehearse some songs for the Soper-Reese Theatre show next Friday. I got a chance to work on the duets that I am doing with Sarah Ryan and it went very well indeed. Sarah is a lovely young woman with a fine soprano voice. Our voices seemed to blend nicely, and she is a quick study so we were able to work out most of what we will be doing together in Lakeport. I am especially pleased with our collaboration on Slow Boat to China. We are dong a version recorded by Bette Midler and Barry Manilow that includes banter between the performers. Dorian asked me to rewrite it to suit the occasion - basically it is a dialogue between a singer and her piano accompanist, which I altered to work for two singers. In the original, the plot is that Midler is trying to woo Manilow to rejoin her band. In our version I am trying to get Sarah to go out dancing with me after the show. Sarah was a great sport about the whole thing, especially considering that in our version she is being hit on by a guy who is old enough to be her father :-). We are also working up duets on the Louie Prima song, Jump, Jive and Wail, and the swing hits, Fly Me to the Moon and Steppin Out with My Baby. It promises to be a great show. Here is a YouTube video of the Midler/Manilow version of Slow Boat.
