Tonight as we sleep in peace by faith under the watchful hand of God we can thank those soldiers who seventy years ago this evening were huddled together on the Northwest coast of France... They had exhausted themselves all day in the assault on Normandy. Now they were encouraging one another and pulling out whatever they had to keep warm, making plans to push further up the beachhead the next morning hopefully into mainland France. The world changed for the good that day even in the midst of ten thousand lost Allied lives... Interestingly, one hundred and fifty years ago this November we will acknowledge the anniversary of the Battle of Franklin where in five hours ten thousand American lives from both the North and South were also lost... We are likewise reminded that 2014 is the one hundredth anniversary of the start of WW1... another amazing saga in the modern worlds best and worst moments... Tonight we pray a prayer of thanks for Gods justice and mercy in the midst of such a broken world and give praise that we see them both meet in Jesus...
