Tonight at Council, after considerable thought I voted against the Helmet By-Law in its current form which is only applicable to residents under the age of 18. I made an attempt to amend the by-law so it would be inclusive of all ages but there were no takers amongst Council to second that motion so it didnt go to a vote. Majority of Council did vote in favour of the under 18 version however so it will be going forward in that form. When it comes to protecting the publics safety I feel there is a right way to enact such legislation. In this instance I felt that applying such a by-law to only some residents but not all residents was not the right way to protect the interests of the greater good, therefore I opposed. It would have been easy to vote in favour of the under 18 version of the by-law just to show support but knowing that accidents dont discriminate by age I would have been beside myself if a tragedy were to happen to someone 18 or older and I had not stood to protect that person.
