Tonight at The Perth Blues Club, Charles Hotel - 8 pm - Entry $15 members $10 We care for nurses night. President Rick Steele has designated the first Tuesday in May as ‘We care for nurses night’. A few recent encounters with these unsung heroes inspired Rick to dedicate a night to them; a tribute he hopes will become an annual event. “This has been a long held idea since I spent two weeks with my mother and nurses as we watched and waited for the end,” explained Rick. “I thought the great job nurses do is often overlooked and they, like lots of other hardworking people in our community, needed a simple pat on the back every now and then. “After all, for most people, a nurse will be present as they enter this world, and a nurse will be there at the end. “A few months ago at a 60th birthday (I used to do twenty-firsts!), I was talking to a couple of young nurses, that was the trigger, along with my recent stay in hospital, to change a push to shove and make this happen.” Perth surgeon Dick Beaver’s band Big Boss Beaver; the Heavy Hitters whose guitarist, Russell Smith’s partner is nurse; and the renowned PBC House Band’s Marc Gordon who is married to a nurse. The musical mix will be upside blues with the emphasis on fun. Nurses with ID get in for just five dollars. “This is just the beginning,” said Rick. “I want to build on this and feature musicians with medical qualifications…doctors and nurses outfits are optional!” 8:00pm - Big Boss Beaver – Is a swing/jump Chicago style, five-piece blues band that also likes to cut across the genre to play lively Texas shuffle and modern rhythm and blues numbers. Dick Beaver (harmonica, vocals and steel guitar), Dave Joske (guitar and vocals), Mike Weise (saxophones), Clive OLeary (drums) and John Hunter (bass). “Dancing is what it is all about, so help yourself and well see you on the dance floor,” they say. 8:45pm - Paul Daly and the Heavy Hitters - With a combined 200+ years experience of live performance credentials Paul Walter Daly and the Heavy Hitters can rightfully lay claim to being Australia’s premium power Rhythm and Blues band.
