Tonight ended in a little detour of cultural exploration through music. I stumbled upon my very old (registered 2005) Last.fm account. After resetting my password and getting back in I went to a feature that I used to use a lot almost 10 years ago! (Geez!) I would look over the previous weeks scrobbling music charts on a per country basis, hoping to discover new music and the differences between countries and what was reflective and perhaps also matched the sentiment of that week. Of course I would get the common global bands appearing in country charts (The Beatles, Slipknot, Coldplay, Madonna, Kate Bush, Lady Gaga etc.. you get the picture). But what I was searching for were the anomalies that stood out to me, the unheard of yet popular localised/national artists. So.. after trying Greece, UK, Chile, US and getting fairly similar results (English language pop songs) without any major differences or native language tracks or artists... I went over to Russia and thats when things started to become unique.. like Chinese Nu Metal bands in the top scrobbled charts from last week (19th Oct 2014) and Ukrainian rap to Russian Post-Punk, overall much harder and darker music. I also discovered that South Africans listen to a lot of rock yet the rock bands are exclusively South African. But then I decided to look at the top charts in Japan, and things became ultra unique... I had really been taken to another planet Im very sure of that, dont try to tell me otherwise (Ive been to Japan and loved it there, but this I wasnt expecting). Make your own mind up but where did the inspiration come from in this one? Source: last.fm/charts/artists/hyped/place/Japan?ending=1413720000 All in a Friday nights exploration. Enjoy and please do share your unique cultural musical discoveries too!
