Tonight in Montreal I play a couple of songs at this: TRANS TIME | Time for trans visibility in contemporary art FIRST INTERNATIONAL TRANS ARTIST SHOW IN MONTREAL FROM SEPTEMBER 25 TO OCTOBER 2, 2014 Presented by curator Ianna Book in collaboration with Marie-Claude G. Olivier and Virginie Jourdain, the TRANS TIME exhibition is a space of visibility bringing together local and international trans* artists, all of whom contribute to the growth of trans culture, which should be understood as artistic productions, forms, representations, and political advocacy by and for trans* persons. As the first collective trans exhibition in Montreal, TRANS TIME demands visibility and sharing of trans culture. Participating artists ALEC BUTLER – Toronto, CAN, AMOS MAC – New York, USA, C. W., Toronto, CAN & Z. F. By exploring various media, like video, photography, drawing, or performance, these artists illustrate their social, political and cultural experiences according to a diversity of paths and opinions. The curatorial team has chosen a collaborative and feminist approach, which is inclusive and anti-authoritarian. TRANS TIME is a non-hierarchical space for emerging and established artists. Artists were selected through the principal of trans self-determination, with a focus on artists who have a practice that resonates both in the realm of contemporary art as well as within a larger social context. This first edition of TRANS TIME reinforces trans artists’ political stance from within the contemporary art world by participating from a critical perspective in the recognition and defense of the rights of trans persons in Quebec and elsewhere. Trans* refers to the principal of self-determination for those who identify as trans.
