Tonight live at PBC: IVAN ZAR DAVE BREWER BAND KICKSTART CADILLACS Born in Alexandria, Egypt, Ivan Zar was drawn to the blues at an early age. He taught himself the harmonica and Delta Blues style guitar after moving to Perth in the early 1960s. He has been a constant ever since forming The Elks in the 70s and being part of classic blues recordings much sought after by aficionados of the genre. Dave Brewer began playing with The Elks in 1976. They relocated from Perth to Sydney in 1980 but a few years later the seminal band was no more. Dave stayed on in Sydney joining soul/R&B band, The Dynamic Hepnotics, The Mighty Reapers (with ‘Continental’ Robert Susz) and later, world music outfit The Catholics (with Lloyd Swanton of the Necks). During the 90s, the Mighty Reapers released five CDs and supported many international artists including: BB King, Albert King, Buddy Guy, Screaming Jay Hawkins, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. They also supplied backing on tours by artists such as Hubert Sumlin, Louisiana Red, Billy Branch, Bobby Radcliff, Big JayMcNeely, Mojo Buford, Phillip Walker and Margie Evans. The Catholics also released five CDs and did numerous Australian tours, two Canadian tours and one throughout Europe where the band performed at both the Montreaux and North Sea Jazz festivals. In 2000, Dave moved back to his hometown of Perth and since then has been playing regularly and recording with his own band, the Lucky Oceans band, Natalie Gillespie, The DooDaddies and others. In 2008, Dave released his acclaimed debut album, Life of Riley. His latest album, Night Walkin’ was released last year. The Kickstart Cadillacs were formed late in 2011 through a typical mix of Gumtree ads and friends of friends. The band members all hail from differing musical backgrounds, though have a joint love of blues/rockabilly/rock’n’roll, which pretty much describes their sound.
