Tonight my friend and I tried Malo for the first time. I had heard - TopicsExpress

Tonight my friend and I tried Malo for the first time. I had heard lots of great things so I was excited to try it for myself. Unfortunately, my friend and I were both disappointed. Lets start with one positive thing, the Mexican Mule drink was good. A Mezcal version of a moscow mule which was unique. Onto the not-so good. The salsa that came out with the chips was a pureed spaghetti sauce-looking salsa that had a smoky flavor but no spice and none of the chunks of veggies I like in my salsa. We ordered the empanadas as an appetizer. They tasted like spinach cheese dip with some jalapenos in a fried shell. They were bland and all you really tasted was thick cheese. Perhaps my friend can post a pic of them in the comments since I didnt get one. They were not impressive. For dinner I ordered the Beef Barbacoa Enchiladas. First off, the presentation not appetizing with the odd enchilada sauce color and the glut of cheese on top. The beef inside was not shredded barbacoa but more like a beef goop of sorts that resembled beef ravioli filling. There was really no seasoning or spice at all and the cheese drowned everything out anyway. The cilantro rice really had no flavor at all. The drunken beans were the highlight of the meal with smoked pork in them. They tasted like they belonged in a bbq place though and not a mexican restaurant. My friend ordered the Texas Shrimp Enchiladas. Again they were overwhelmed with cheese sauce and the shrimp inside were rubbery. She had the same sides as I did. I am writing this review with the hope that Malo will do a better job with these dishes in the future so diners wont have the same experience that I did. I know some people who have enjoyed the place but I just did not. With so many wonderful restaurants in Des Moines, especially mexican restaurants, with stellar $9 enchiladas, like Mi Mexico, I would expect an enchilada for $15.99 to be outstanding. It was not and I left feeling disappointed. As a side note, I tipped the server about 20% even though the food wasnt good because that wasnt his fault but even he managed to disappoint me with an off-color comment said jokingly at the end of our meal.
