Tonight, reading through my news feed and seeing peoples responses - TopicsExpress

Tonight, reading through my news feed and seeing peoples responses to the decision not to indict the shooter of Michael Brown and the ensuing public reaction, I find myself struggling. My heart hurts. I want to unfriend people. I want to shake and shout at people. I want to sit down and have civilized discussions about privilege and the cycle of violence with people. I want to magically be able to blast through every single wall of conditioning, self-righteousness, defensiveness, and fear that keeps people from being compassionate toward their fellow humans. To the people in the streets tonight, my heart goes out to you. To every person who feels the pain of this and so many other injustices, my heart goes out to you. To the law enforcement and judiciaries involved and every person denying the injustice of what has occurred, no matter how wrong and lost I feel you to be, my heart goes out to you. When a person or group commits violence, or sits silent in the face of it, I believe that they lose a piece of themselves to it. We are all hurt when violence occurs. This is one among many, many, deep-rooted wrongs we hear about or experience every day. Some of us have the privilege to keep quiet, to listen to that fearful little voice that says, its not my problem. Others do not. But who among us really knows what to say? Or to do? I have no answers, no judgments. What I do have is a heart. An aching one for sure, but one that knows only compassion. When talking about tragedy, no matter what walk of life you come from, try, please, try to listen to your own.
