Tonight we launch a new Spring series, by request (and a good one at that!) THE VOYAGE OF THE SCARLET QUEEN, tonight April 06 from 7 to 9 pm on THE GOLDEN AGE OF RADIO over WBAI 99.5 FM and Streaming live at wbai.org. Well hear two more episodes of our serial I LOVE A MYSTERY “Bury Your Dead, Arizona” by Carlton E Morse from Mutual, November 29 & 30, 1949. Chapters 7 & 8 find Jack, Doc, and Reggie living in Dry Gulch Marys boarding house. The magician known as “The Maestro” has turned his assistant Nasha into a wolf, who has escaped through the window into the desert. Jack Packard goes off in pursuit, while the howling of the wolf pack fills the night. We meet Laurie (also Mercedes McCambridge), the daughter of Jumping Dick. With Russell Thorson as Jack Packard, Jim Boles as Doc Long, and Tony Randall as Reggie York, with Louis Van Rooten as The Maestro, Mercedes McCambridge as Nasha, Bob Dryden as Jumpin Dick, (Athena Lord?) as Dry Gulch Mary. Premiering this day in history 1945 was THIS IS YOUR F.B.I, the first show about the bureau sanctioned by The Hoove, who appears at the end of the episode. Sorry for the flawed copy we are playing, but its the best I could find, and were presenting it for its historic value. From April 06, 1945 on the Blue Network, its dubbed “Espionage”, with Karl Swenson, narrated by Frank Lovejoy. And we kick off our new series THE VOYAGE OF THE SCARLET QUEEN, starring Elliot Lewis. This terrific adventure series, written by Morton Fine and David Friedkin, follows Phil Carney, master of the ketch Scarlet Queen, on a quest for Kangs treasure. Ed Max is First Mate Red Gallagher, and the rest of the cast is filled with the likes of Bill Conrad and other Hollywood greats of radio. This continuing saga lasted for 22 weeks, at which point the program continued with individual weekly stories. The show premiered on CBS on July 03, 1947, and this and many of the episodes were preserved for us by The Armed Forces Radio Service. The audition for SCARLET QUEEN was recorded on Feb 02, 1947, with Howard Duff in the lead, and Elliott Lewis as Gallagher. I have played this series at least once over WBAI, and once on YesterdayUSA, aand every time we have listened to the Duff audition instead of the actual first episode. Since this is the first time were hearing it, it only seems fair that we listen to Howard Duff tonight as the greatest private on the radio in THE ADVENTURES OF SAM SPADE, DETECTIVE. From April 10, 1949 on CBS “The Stopped Watch Caper”. Theres mayhem in a horror house full of strange characters and man-eating plants! Lureen Tuttle (Effie) is apparently in the hospital, so her sister Buffy fills in. Wish I knew who is playing her.
