Tonights Art Moment is Half of a Temple Drum Frame dating to the second half of the 12th century. This intricately-carved, massive frame nearly eleven feet in height, once held a large barrel-shaped drum. The drum was meant to be played with sticks in the performance of ancient Japanese court music in accompaniment to ritual dances. These dances, first presented in Japan in the 6th century, took place in both courtyards of palaces and of Buddhist temples. The missing half of this drum frame would have been carved with a mirror image of the dragon surrounded by flames and could motifs you see here. A rendering shows what the full drum would have looked like.
