Tonights Dad Facts: Spuds, Tonight you are playing Milwaukee, Wisconsin ... formerly Milwaukie. The name was changed by a newspaper in the mid 1830s. Somehow, the news of the name change didnt make it to the Portland, Oregon area ... hence the town of Milwaukie just outside of Portland! Milwaukee was primarily settled by German immigrants. This is why you find an emphasis on beer and German food. Polish immigrants are helped build the city as well. Now, on to a few fun facts. Les Paul was born in the area and began his career in Milwaukee music venues. Steve Miller of the Steve Miller Band is also from the Milwaukee aread. The Summerfest Music Festival is the largest in the world (according to the Guinness Book Of Records). The typewriter was invented in Milwaukee and Gene Wilder who played Willy Wonka is from Milwaukee. On an unrelated note, you may have heard of the phrase Sleep Tight. The phrase came from the old days when beds were made from a wooden frame and ropes were crisscrossed between the frames to support a straw mattress. Over time, the ropes would stretch allowing the mattress to sag. Occasionally, you would have to tighten the ropes so as to sleep more comfortably. Hence...sleep tight! Who knew! One more thing...Milwaukee was the first city in the US to have public bus service. Love, Dad
