Tonights Dose of Demento is somewhat apropos, since I just left a Queen tribute show. Weird Al Yankovic has been poking fun at popular music for (believe it or not) over 35 years. Michael Jackson, Madonna, The Knack, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, The B-52s, Pharrell Williams, Lorde, Metallica, Coolio, and Don McLean (just to name a few) have fallen victim to his parodies. Today, we have become accustomed to the near-perfect musical reproductions of the originals, but back in the day, it was just him, his accordion, and (maybe) his buddy Jon Bermuda Schwartz banging on the accordion case like a drum. Such is the case of this particular classic, in which he pokes fun at Queen with Another One Rides the Bus. This song was recorded live, on the air, at KMET Los Angeles, during The Dr. Demento Show, on Sunday, September 14, 1980. Here he is, performing very much the same way, on NBCs The Tomorrow Show with Tom Snyder, the next year.
