Tonights Machias Rotary Club meeting was very informative. Danny & Alice Sullivan of the Washington County Fiber Initiative made a very compelling case for bringing high speed fiber connectivity to folks doorstep in Washington County. Several things to think about: 1. These advances can help businesses of all sizes compete on the global stage. If people can work for a major corporation and live in Washington County, we should be removing that barrier. If small businesspeople can use fiber to get their product to market and create a greater awareness of our area, why not allow that too? It kind of makes our geography less important. 2. If the state can invest in private businesses willing to install the fiber to homes and businesses through existing groups like the ConnectME Authority, why shouldnt we at least give it a look? 3. We are not keeping up with other states. Maine is in the lower 40s as far as connectivity/speed goes. Improving that can not only make our area more economically attractive, but maybe, possibly help reduce the cost of healthcare and other services. Wouldnt it be great if people didnt have to travel to Bangor for a doc or a meeting all the time? Not saying its going to be easy, but we cant keep treading water, or falling behind either, and if there are common sense ways that we can improve access to technology without breaking the bank, we should lay those options on the table and not be afraid to look at them.
