Tonights topic for Halloween: Serial Killers. Serial killers seem to keep popping up in the news lately. Today, a guy in Gary, Indiana (birthplace of the Jackson 5) admitted to killing at least 7 women. Yesterday brought the news that the DNA evidence identifying Jack the Ripper turned out to be wrong. Why do we even care about this story anymore? Its seems a little odd to me that murders from the year 1888 can still capture the imagination of people today. Theres just something about serial killers that people (myself included) find endlessly fascinating. Although serial killers are a dark side to life, The Beatles put a somewhat jaunty spin on the topic with Maxwells Silver Hammer. Its an odd little tale about a boy that murders people with his hammer. Paul McCartney wrote this tune for the album The Beatles (The White Album), but it wasnt in time to make the album. McCartney brought it back for the Get Back sessions, and it finally landed on the Abbey Road album. Paul was intent on trying to make the song into a single, and he made the group put in the time to get the song right. John Lennon wasnt a fan of the song, and Ringo Starr called it the worst track we ever had to record. It went on for f--king weeks. I thought it was mad. George Harrison called it a fun song, but its kind of a drag because Maxwell keeps on destroying everyone like his girlfriend then the school teacher, and then, finally, the judge. Regardless of his bandmates opinions, McCartney got his way and finished the song. Pauls take on the track: my analogy for when something goes wrong out of the blue, as it so often does, as I was beginning to find out at that time in my life. I wanted something symbolic of that, so to me it was some fictitious character called Maxwell with a silver hammer. I dont know why it was silver, it just sounded better than Maxwells hammer. When you put it that way, Paul, it really doesnt sound that bad. In fact, its never sounded bad to me. Thats why Im playing it tonight. That, and someone made a fun little animated video to go with it. - Mr. Big #TheBeatles #MaxwellsSilverHammer #serialkiller #JacktheRipper #Halloween
