Tonights guitar tip combines vibrato and Trem/Floyd Rose use. The main thing is to focus on is pitch and touch. I would get out your tuner (headstock, floor, rack whatever ya got). You are going to use this to monitor your pitch and accuracy. Next give yourself a drone note. You can use a looper, a keyboard swell etc. I like using my low E. That way I have a good common tone as well as a ton of choices on the neck, it will keep ya from getting bored at first. Lets start your loop and go to the note E (9th Fret G string). Use your third finger, that way you have your 1st and 2nd fingers as anchors or leverage. Now the fun begins. Try to mimic some of your favorite players. Try making your vibrato wide, small, fast, slow. Make it sing, make it part of you! Watch YouTube videos of your favorite players. I would highly recommend watching Clapton, Andy Timmons and Jeff Beck, also cope licks from slide players like Ry Cooder or Ronnie Wood. Your best friend in all of this is your ears. Make sure you always return back to true E. Now watch the tuner, you can see the range (how wide)or the speed or your vibrato. One of my favorite tricks is the bend down from a note into a wide vibrato al’a Jeff Beck. So in this case you would start out with the note F# 1 and a half steps above the note E. Lower the bend into the E and shake the hell out of it. Now apply any or all of this to “any” speed or width of vibrato. The key is to experiment use the same note so your concentrate on the actual process and not just the note. RECORD EVERYTHING!!!!! Use your phone or anything ya got so you can hear the difference and see which you like the best. The same tricks can apply to using a bar. The tuner again will be your friend here. With the bar its more about being expressive. Listen to anyone from Steve Vai and Brad Gillis to Jeff Beck and Allan Holdsworth. All very different styles, all great results. Have fun! SG
