Tonights teaching at church hit a little close to home...one of the subjects the wife and I have always disagreed on...should children be exposed to something that they really have no idea the truth that lies within said thing...Ill share a little story from my childhood at the ripe age of 8...my two older brothers snuck me in to see a movie at an old theater that used to stand behind the uhaul business in fort smith...the movie, Friday the 13th...as we entered into the lounge, the place was packed...there must have been hundreds of people all squeezed into such a small place, trying to get a good seat...the movie started, and I was instantly terrified...about half way through, that $1.25 24 ounce drink hit my bladder...and wouldnt you know it, neither brother would take me to the bathroom...well, off I went, to take on the world, and find the mens room...as I exited the theater, and the door slammed behind me, the only noise that could be heard in the lobby was the faint yells and screams coming from the theater, the video game frogger, and the occasional squeak from the hot dog rotisserie...upon locating the mens room, I opened the door, and stood in the doorway looking underneath every stall...there was not one person in the whole place, lobby or bathroom...well, I stood my ground, right there at the doorway...I thought to myself that I could at least hit the sink from there....I PEED ON EVERYTHING FROM THE DOOR TO THE CEILING TO THE SINK...and the voice of Forest Gump comes to mind when I say, I WAS RUNNIN. I made it back to my seat, zipped up, and sat there, hands over my ears, with my eyes closed the rest of the time...truth be known, had I been told the truth about what I was about to see, there is NO WAY I would have walked into that theater...fast forward 33 years, and several parents question why I wont allow my girls to be exposed to some of the same items their classmates are being exposed to...well, in total honesty, I dont think they are ready...I am brutally honest with my kids, and allow them to make a guided decision on their own...99.9% of the time they make, what I think, is the correct decision...parents, be honest to your kiddos all the time...it has done nothing but strengthened my relationship with our ten year old...she makes very smart choices when away from us, and that excites me...gives me just a little assurance that I might be raising my kiddos the right way...
