Tonights thriller on Netflix Disk: PRISONERS. Amazing cast, including Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Maria Bello, Viola Davis, Terrence Howard, Paul Dano, and Melissa Leo, in thriller about two child abductions that send frantic Dad (Jackman) over the edge and drive him to kidnap and torture a nearly mute, semi-retarded suspect (Dano) who the police have released. Strong performances and a very real sense of place (including, a rarity, the economic circumstances of the characters) drive a drama that seems very based in the world as we know it until it abruptly changes genres and becomes substantially more of a genre horror movie in the last third. I mean it. The Gimme A Breaks multiply like rabbits after the movie has already used up more than two hours of its two and a half hour running time. I goes from GONE BABY GONE to, practically, Hammer Horror, completely blowing the moral stakes that went before. I wish it hadnt felt the need to present such a wild final act, but liked it very much up until then and that carried me through.
