Tonight’s Hendrix: Gil Evans Centennial Celebration (from May 21, 2012), “Little Wing” – Billy Harper on tenor sax, and quite a marvelous band (do listen to Howard Johnson playing the theme on a penny whistle in the beginning, and yes, Will Lee is singing, and Lew Soloff is doing what Lew Soloff do best, and Mark Egan is playing great on the bass, and Paul Shaffer on glockenspiel, and …). And yes, Billy Harper also plays on the fantastic The Gil Evans Orchestra Plays the Music of Jimi Hendrix (from 1974). And I should probably add, one of the greatest concerts I’ve ever attended was with Gil Evans Orchestra – in Stavanger in 1987.
