Tonight’s Sweet 16 match-up: Florida versus UCLA features a contrast of styles. The Gators – a defense-oriented, senior-laden, just-win baby attitude; the Bruins – up tempo, quick offense, run if you can, fast paced. The Gators are led by Scottie Wilbekin, a 6’2’’ senior and SEC Player of the Year. The Bruins are led by 6’9’’ sophomore Ryan Anderson, a point forward who can play 4 positions on the floor. The 3 previous meetings in the Tournament have all gone Florida’s way – once in the 2006 Finals, once in the 2007 Semi-Finals and the last in the round of 32 back in 2011. However, this UCLA squad has nothing in common with those Ben Howland-coached teams. Former Hooiser Steve Alford has his handprints on this team – this is his 4th different team to make the Dance (having previously taken Missouri State, Iowa & New Mexico). Florida is trying to earn its way into its 4th straight Elite Eight and attempting to solidify Billy Donovan’s place among the coaching hierarchy. The Bruins are 25-2 this season when scoring a minimum of 75 points. The Gators in the tournament have not given up more than 55 points and average giving up about 57 on the season – Top 5 in the Country. The Gators’ school record 28 game winning streak and a berth to play for the Final Four are at stake. This senior class, Prather, Wilbekin, Yeguete and Young, who have the most all-time wins, want to extend their record and make it to their 4th straight Elite Eight. The Gators will need to shoot the ball well in addition to playing the stellar defense they have become known for. I also think they need to convert their free throw opportunities – make at least 70% - as well as shoot 40% from beyond the arc to ensure victory. I hope I am correct – Go Gators!
