Tonight’s oldie comes from a beat band that formed in London in 1962. Named after one of its co-founders, Manfred Mann the quintet had several hits before calling it quits in 1969. As for Manfred Mann the person, this keyboard-playing South Africa native was born in Johannesburg on today’s date in 1940. My pick this evening is the cover of a song originally recorded in 1963 by the American vocal group The Exciters. “Do Wah Diddy Diddy” would become an international smash single for Manfred Mann in 1964, topping the pop charts in the U.K., the U.S., and Canada.
