Tony Abbott has done some silly things in his short time as PM but this is the moment he has politically shot himself in the head. Im not against Knights and Dames per se, of course its dated and I wouldnt have brought it back, but it could be a nod to our history for one or two truly extraordinary people who have been extreme contributors to Australian society. We still have echoes of English tradition everywhere; Sovereigns head on coinage, green leather seats in lower house of parliament/red in the upper house, playing test cricket in creams, even driving on the left side of the road. Handing a knighthood to that racist, ignorant aristocrat of mostly Greek and Danish extraction, who has spent perhaps six weeks in Australia in his 93 years is nothing short of an embarrassment. Abbotts judgement on this is mind-bogglingly bad and to me looks like the beginning of the end for him. His backbench are already in mutiny and the backlash will only aggravate that. I wondered why Shorten started talking republic yesterday, especially considering Dame Mum-in-Law. Now it all makes sense. Turnbull the republican is the reason, further destabilisation of Abbotts core.
