Tony Abbotts decision to scrap Gonski from 2018, effectively - TopicsExpress

Tony Abbotts decision to scrap Gonski from 2018, effectively cutting two-thirds of the agreed funding to disadvantaged schools, will hurt thousands of Indigenous students. It is an ideological decision that ignores the real effects that social disadvantage have on children from their first day at school. We need to teach teachers how to get the best out of Indigenous students, we need to do more to get the best and brightest teachers to remote areas and Indigenous communities. That is why Tony Abbotts decision to scrap the Gonski reforms after just four years is such a cruel blow. It gives us a taste of what is possible, and then takes it away. Cutting schools funding is not a necessity, it is a choice that this government has made, and I believe it is a wrong-headed and short-sighted choice. There should be no excuse for failing to educate ALL children in Australia to make the most of their ability. We are a wealthy nation thanks to our natural resources, mostly sourced from Indigenous lands that were never ceded. I dont want to watch another generation of Indigenous children growing up and not realising their full potential because they have been denied the opportunities that the Gonski reforms would have offered them. - Dr Tom Calma
