Tony Monaco, Howard Paul and Justin Varnes did the traditional Organ, Guitar, Drums trio genre proud tonight at the Velvet Note..... Tony drives the bus with an East Coast push that swings relentlessly.... As Tony said to me, I get to play with Justin (drums) with my left hand and Howard (Guitar) with my right.... He did both in such a deep groove, all I can say is that it was a joy to experience.... You would think that Howard might get pushed aside by such a prodigious force but Hell No.... Howard was right there... His sense of time and ability to pull off his thoughts were from my vantage point flawless... He not only didnt give in but during his solos, there was no mistake when it was his time to speak and speak he did... Some extraordinary guitar playing for certain.... and I havent said a word about the comping, simply as good as Ive seen/heard.... Justin Varnes just glued it all together, truly creating feels that were singularly as expressive as his band mates while punching, weaving and bobbing all through the sonic ring.... Man, three guys masterfully laying it down. Can you tell I loved it......?
