Too Late For Training Astronauts dont go into space then learn how to work in weightlessness. Law enforcement personnel dont wait until a bank robbery to learn how to take down armed suspects. I didnt investigate any real discrimination complaints until after I spent 4 months learning about human relations in general and taking simulated complaints. If you are just starting the police academy and you get caught in a bank robbery, you hide under a desk like everyone else. When our companions get reactive because of squirrels, other dogs, humans, etc.. Its too late to think about training at that point. We train for squirrels, etc.. when there are no real squirrels around. Then we work our way up to far away squirrels, then maybe close squirrels. Sometimes despite our best efforts at management, things happen. When they do, we just get our pets feeling safe again. If they are jumping and lunging and growling and snapping, dont stand there in front of the squirrel/human/dog/... waiting for calm. Dont force them to turn their heads around (unless its for safety purposes). Just do what you need to do to help your dog feel safe again. It might mean telling the scary human to go away. You might have to drag your dog away (not ideal of course). Once your dog is not reacting, then analyze the situation and think about what can be done better the next time. Like maybe walking at night to reduce the chance of seeing squirrels. Walking on wooded trails to avoid cyclists. Crossing the street when you see strange dogs, etc.. youtu.be/fULNUr0rvEc
