Too late to get into the Voice proper, this just in for book lovers.. Currituck County author Travis Morris has published another great local history book- Hand Crafted Boats of Old Currituck: Fishing and Boating on the Carolina Coast, just released by The History Press. Before sleek factory boats dominated Currituck Sound, locals piloted these waters in hulls made by hand. Some still can be seen today- beautiful works of art designed for the utility of travel, fishing, hunting, scouting and touring. They figure prominently in recollections of a bygone sportsman’s paradise, and native storyteller Travis Morris offers an engaging collection of anecdotes, interviews and detailed craft descriptions. It’s an insider’s history of Currituck boating heritage featuring the famed Whalehead Club, an accidental run-in with the Environmental Protection Agency and a harrowing U.S. Coast Guard rescue. Travis will be signing copies of Hand Crafted Boats of Old Currituck (19.99) on Friday, at Duck’s Cottage Coffee & Books, 1240 Duck Road, Duck, from 9:00am – 11:30am. Later that same day, he will be at Downtown Books, 105 Sir Walter Raleigh Street, Manteo, from 5pm – 7:30pm. It’s First Friday in Manteo! Live music outdoors, restaurant specials, later shop hours, and more fun happenings all add up to a great way to start the last month of Summer!
