Too much playing the game and not enough work makes Pete a dull boy... Maybe the prisoner’s dilemma constituted by boat stabilisation manoeuvres has turned the boat into a prison ship, and if we all just move at the same time we can overturn it and swim to freedom (or at least a less oppressive boat).... The increasing emphasis on quantity of research over quality of research is often talked about under the cultural heading of ‘publish or perish’, but I think this name, although apt to some extent, masks the really dangerous aspect of this social dynamic: it is a positive feedback loop.... network crystallisation leads to the tyranny of the audience, which in turn leads to mandatory dullness. Crystallisation makes it harder for non-established positions to establish themselves, because it makes the amount of work an author has to do to publicly defend their position not merely proportionally greater in relation to how unusual or bold it is (this is expected: no-pain-no-game) but exponentially greater...
