The increasing emphasis on quantity of research over quality of research is often talked about under the cultural heading of ‘publish or perish’, but I think this name, although apt to some extent, masks the really dangerous aspect of this social dynamic: it is a positive feedback loop.... network crystallisation leads to the tyranny of the audience, which in turn leads to mandatory dullness.
