Too often we begin our worship with song and force ourselves into some state of mind that just isnt focused on God. We should instead be spending our week preparing for our worship in song by worshipping in prayer, spending time alone with God. How can we truly worship God if we havent even talked to Him this week? How can we truly worship God if we havent talked to Him even during the worship time? Once we have sung praise to God and then gone on to other parts of our services, do we hear His voice lingering? Do we smell the presence of God hovering like a fine perfume over us? Do we wait for someone to cue us to seek God, or do we knock on heavens door ourselves? Like the woman with the issue of blood in the Bible, do we push through the crowd to touch God, or do we try to wait until the traffic clears, until theres a path cleared for us? If we wait too long, we get frustrated and tired. He says in Matthew 11:28-30 (MSG), “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” Oh that we could just let go and let God.
