Took my Dad to see his usual consultant on Wednesday. He too was - TopicsExpress

Took my Dad to see his usual consultant on Wednesday. He too was horrified at the dose he has been on which he didnt prescribe. He had prescribed a dopamine replacer called Madopar which Dad has been on for his Parkinsons for 6 yrs, but had prescribed a dispersible form at 12.5mg and to take up to 3 tablets at each 3 to 4 hourly dose. But hes been on 125mg tablets for probably at least a year. The chemist clearly didnt note the dot separating the 12.5 and has been dispensing 10 times the dose. So instead of 37.5mg per dose hes been on 375mg per dose. No wonder the eyebrows of the private consultant I took him to last week, nearly shot through his hairline. I have a clinic for my teacher trainees here today so no time to investigate, but he starts on the new much lower doses of the controlled release form which I am certain will cause problems with his mobility until his body adjusts. I am ringing the PD Society tomorrow to see what this massive daily overdose for maybe a year, could have done to him and will have to take it up with Boots chemists who we use. The current pharmacist is so lovely, young Northern Irish guy who bends over backwards to help, knows Dad by his Christian name and always asks after him if I go in to pick up meds. But he wasnt there when this continuing mistake must have happened, so I dont feel bad about tackling them. But what would happen had it been a drug that an overdose could kill? As my Dad just orders a repeat prescription each time hes just been given the same ever since the mistake was made.
