Took pops out to see Roy Brooks at the old Berts on Jefferson years back with Marcus Belgrave blowing some fine trumpet along with Belgraves cousin, fresh off the cruise ship scene, singing some great standards. Dad had no idea what he was in for...not only did he get Brooks fine drumming throughout the night but he had a neat grin on his face when he proclaimed, Its not everyday when you see a guy play the shit out of a saw. Brooks would pull out a darn good tree saw and use a mallot on it during a wonderful treatment of a jazz ballet. Couldnt get Dad out too much back then but he damn well knew he witnessed some beyond fellowship high premium sharing that night. Brooks has Detroiters Hugh Lawson on keys and (the big bad azz sound of) Cecil McBee on bass. Oh...and a couple of other guys playing horn here too. RIP Mr. Brooks!
