Top 10 reasons why Im excited to play Collins in Lake George 10. The people. One reason is that a lot of the Collins players are people I havent played in a while or ever. Another is that in general terms (not to offend TWL players though), it seems like Collins players are more friendly and personal. 9. The opportunities - This is the start of something new for me, and I hope Im taking a step in the right direction. Fortunately, there is no monopoly on dictinoaries in North America, and I am free to choose which dictionary I want. 8. The lexicon - Collins tries better to account for the rich history and diversity of the English language, moreso than TWL. 7. The childish excitement - I remember how excited I was before my first TWL tournament in 2007, and my first chess tournament in 2012. I hope to have that same level of excitement before Lake George (and its looking that way) 6. The camaraderie - I watched aside on the Collins players in Webster, and they seemed to be having a lot of fun, much more than I was having. Im hoping that thats the same in Lake George. 5. The pairings - Although the pairings may end up similar to the TWL divisions pairings, at the very least fewer rounds will be predetermined (since its unlikely Collins gets up to 28), and I prefer that to more rounds being predetermined 4. The field - I think its a good idea to play as diverse a field as possible for my first Collins tournament. This is shaping up to be the biggest Collins field ever other than Nationals. In it we have players ranging from being rated 556 to being rated 2007, and we have players from 9 different states/provinces. 3. The support - I love the amount of support Im getting from different experienced Collins players, be it Norman Weis group (even if Norman hasnt played Collins yet) and Chris Lipe, Winter, and Geoff Thevenots advice in how to learn new Collins words, and how prepared I have to be for my first Collins tournament. 2. The 5 point challenge rule - I may like it more than double, I may hate it, and I may be neutral, but it is worth a shot. Also, if you have a bad word knowledge like me, it should be more beneficial to me than double. 1. The idea - Collins in North America makes strides at attempting to create a unified dictionary for tournament Scrabble. Although Hasbro may continue to sell a TWL after Collins becoming official, Collins represents world unity, even if it is only over a Scrabble board.
