Top Five Immunity Boosting Foods We have all grown up with the proverb, “Prevention is better than cure”, and nature seems to believe the same as well. Why else are we all blessed with something we call the immune system? Our surroundings are almost saturated with a huge variety of microorganisms and we constantly come in contact with bacteria, yeasts, molds, fungi, viruses and many such organisms. While some of these are harmless, quite a few of these are responsible for causing serious and sometimes terminal infections and diseases amongst us. The immune system maintains a balance and provides us protection by defending against these microorganisms. Food is an important tool to stay healthy as almost 75 percent of our immune system is in the gut. Hence, what we eat directly affects our immunity and in turn health. Foods that are best to boost immunity are: Yogurt: The active bacterial culture present in yogurt keeps the intestine free of many diseases. Yogurt containing probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri stimulates the white blood cell count and boosts immunity. It is suggested to choose products that contain live and active culture of beneficial bacteria. Mushroom: These are rich in many vital nutrients such as protein, fiber, vitamin A, B vitamins and minerals including calcium. Mushrooms are loaded with a compound called beta-glucans which have the ability to activate or modulate the immune system. Some animal studies have established antiviral, antibacterial and anti-tumor effects in mushrooms. Shellfish: Lobsters, crabs and specifically raw oysters and oyster extracts are rich sources of zinc and selenium which are immunity boosting minerals. These also help in increasing the production of cytokines, a protein known to ward off illnesses. Garlic: Allicin, an active component of garlic is known to provide protection against bacteria and other infections. The phytochemical, allicin, is great for heart health, helps lower blood pressure, reduces the risk of clot formation and enhances good cholesterol levels. Regular consumption of garlic also reduces the risk of developing certain cancers, specifically stomach and colorectal cancers. Green Tea: Green tea contains plant anti-oxidants; polyphenols which are known to provide protection against damage caused by free radicals. These polyphenols also have anti-inflammatory effects that change the immune system’s response for good. Green tea is also a rich source of an amino acid called L-theanine, responsible to trigger the release of germ fighting compounds from T-cells.
