Top Great Ape News for the week of October 19th - October 25th: 1). Deepest condolences to Ape Action Africa on the loss of Nona’s baby affectionately known as baby bird. Little Baby Bird collapsed last week and caretakers stepped in to help her. She received 24/7 care from staff but she stopped breathing on Friday night, October 17, 2014. They were able to resuscitate her, but she soon stopped breathing a second time and they were unable to bring her back. Nona is distressed at the loss of her baby girl so vets and keepers are watching her closely. Baby Bird was buried next to Pikin, close to her mother Nona and her father Nkan Daniel’s enclosure. 2). Deepest condolences also going out to the Denver Zoo on the loss of their beloved 31 year old Sumatran Orangutan, Mias. Mias started showing signs of illness on October 20th and he suddenly stopped breathing. Mias had been diagnosed with chronic respiratory disease and was being treated for a disease similar to Cystic Fibrosis prior to his death. Mias leaves behind his mate Nias and their 4 year old daughter, Hesty. The zoo says that Mias was an exceptionally attentive father and very tolerant to the mischievous toddler, even allowing her to steal food from his mouth. 3). Ranger Christian Shamavu from the Virunga National Park rescued a baby Grauer’s Gorilla from poachers. It was a well-planned undercover operation as a team of rangers, led by Ranger Shamavu, posed as buyers for the infant gorilla. The baby was rescued and the poachers were arrested. The baby has been name Shamavu and will be moved to GRACE. 4). Dian Fossey Fund Trackers report that elder female Maggie is still leading Bwenge’s group. Fossey staff does not expect this trend to continue for much longer as it is highly out of the ordinary. 5). “Virunga”, the documentary that Leonardo DiCaprio was executive producer will hit theaters in both Los Angeles and New York as well as Netflix on November 7th. Can’t wait to see this one!!! 6). Birthday girl Zaire at the London Zoo turned 40 years young this week and enjoyed a cake made especially for her by British Bake-Off chef Richard Burr!!! Looks like she doesn’t want to share, but who can blame her? The cake was made of walnuts, apples, carrots and sugar free jelly! Richard added that if Zaire had been on the judging panel, he may have won!!! 7). Nalani from the Hannover Zoo was moved to her new residence, the Biopark Valencia, on October 23, 2014. Nalani was born on April 9, 2006 father Buzandi and mother Melima. She will join Group #1, with Mambie, Fossey, Ali and Ebo. Best of luck in your new home princess!!! 8). With Halloween coming next Friday, October 31st, please, please, please, be aware of what kind of candy your are purchasing for your tricks or treater’s, so we can enjoy Halloween and be Palm Oil conscious at the same time! Here’s another way of raising awareness in your community, print the “This House is Ape Friendly” to post outside your door, along with the list of “Ape Friendly” candy. I am including a “fact sheet about unsustainable palm oil and why it is threatening our Great Ape friends and information on for people to get more facts. I am also including puzzles and games for the kiddos! Will the youngsters be interested? Maybe, but I know I always checked my kids candy and with that in mind, it will fall into the hands of parents. If even one person follows through being proactive when grocery shopping, we are doing great work! For more information, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo has provided many options of things to print out, just go to cmzoo/palmoil. Thank you all, and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!
