Prime Minister Henry Puna signed off on the new round of assistance from China, on Saturday, in Fiji. “The Cook Islands is sincerely grateful for the help that China is providing, and we will certainly contribute to the growing relationship by stepping up our strategic and co-operative efforts in the months and years to come,” says Puna. During bilateral talks with President Xi Jinping, the Chinese Leader announced the conclusion of two agreements with the Cook Islands. The first was a new grant of 20 million Chinese Yuan Renminbi (just over $4.1 million). The second was the provision of new machinery and materials for the agriculture sector, under a Revitalisation Project. Puna concluded the agreement formalities with China’s Minister of Commerce Gao Hucheng. The agriculture assistance involves the utilisation of grant funds already provided by China to acquire an array of machinery and materials. The equipment will be sourced and delivered to Rarotonga for distribution by the Government.
