Top Six Data Breach Trends for 2014 Security InfoWatch (01/10/14) Griffin, Joel The theft of debit and credit card information from Target in November and December was just one of many data breaches that took place in 2013. Experian Data Breach Resolutions, which recently released a whitepaper that discusses the results of a study it commissioned on the outlook for the impact and scope of data breaches and makes six predictions, expects even more breaches in 2014. Experians Michael Bruemmer says the company expects to see the cost of the average data breach continue to fall in 2014 due to greater awareness, increased preparedness, and the influence of market demand. Bruemmer and Experian also expect cooperation between government and the private sector on cybersecurity to deepen, especially in regards to preventing data breaches. Another trend is an increase in the number of organizations signing up for cyber insurance, a useful security exercise in its own right due to the security checklists that must be run down to sign up. On the other hand, Experian expects a rise in the number of international data breaches, although new European Union regulations may help increase security. Bruemmer also expects healthcare.org and other government health insurance exchanges to be major targets for hackers in 2014 after reports last year of their security problems.
