Top Ten Airplane Movies (OK, one helicopter snuck in...) in no particular order. 1. Blue Thunder: 1983. Great helicopter, great explosions, Roy Scheider, Malcolm McDowell. And did I mention the great helicopter? 2. The Twilight Zone: The Movie. 1983. I think of this movie, and the TV show starring William Shatner, which preceded it, whenever I get on a plane. Its sorta like some women I know who have Motel Shower Phobias... Anyway, this stars John Lithgow and a gremlin. 3. The Aviator: 2004. Leonardo diCaprio as Howard Hughes. Hughes was brilliant. DiCaprio is brilliant. Great casting all around. Super story. 4. Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. 1964. Peter Sellers, Sterling Hayden, great cast. Was funny but also scary as hell. That last airplane.... 5. The High and the Mighty: 1954. John Wayne saves the day. I saw this first run with my father, if I remember correctly. I was 12. Loved it. 6. Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines: 1965. Air race London to Paris. Laughs all the way. 7. Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo: 1944. This movie could not miss. Patriotism, bravery, Spencer Tracy as Doolittle, THE Doolittle of the Doolittle Raid, and airplanes everywhere. 8. Up In the Air: 2009. George Clooney shines. This movie was sad, depressing, funny at times, melancholy, and it totally rocked. Clooneys characters life revolves around airplanes and airports. And emptiness. 9. Con Air: 1997. Guilty pleasure movie. Nicolas Cage, John Malkovich, John Cusack, Steve Buscemi.... Big plane. Very scary people. 10. The Right Stuff: 1983. Test pilots. Great cast. Chuck Yeager played a cameo role as a bartender. Sam Shephard played Chuck Yeager. Also had Jeff Goldblum, Scott Glenn, Ed Harris, Dennis Quaid, and more. Really gripping docudrama even though I knew the outcome.
