Top Ten Facts: Superman 1) Superman made his debut in Action Comics #1 in April 1938, making him one of the longest continually running characters in comic history. 2) The characters creators originally envisioned the Superman as a villainous bald man with mind powers bent on world domination. This model would later be transferred to Superman villains Lex Luthor and Braniac. 3) A persisting story that has recently come about is that Terry Siegal created his bulletproof superhero in response to the murder of his father during a robbery a year earlier. 4) Early Superman stories had the man of steel battling corrupt businessmen, the KKK, and even Hitler! This was a reflection of the mindset of the creators own views at that time. 5) The characters appearance is largely based on circus strongmen, with a skin tight bodysuit under a bright pair of briefs and boots. The cape, however, was an original idea. 6) In what at the time was a controversial storyline from 1992, Superman died while battling the genetically engineered monster, Doomsday. 7) In early stories, Superman was far more brutal and less concerned about controlling his strength. This was later changed as the character started becoming a pop culture icon. 8) Supermans one major weakness, Kryptonite, was not present at all in the original stories. It was actually introduced in 1943 so that Bud Collyer, who voiced Superman on the radio, could take a vacation. 9) Supermans powers all come from exposure to the radiation of a yellow sun. Under a red sun he is completely powerless, while a blue sun nearly doubles his already massive strength. 10) Superman is considered a classic American icon, permeating all aspects of our culture and daily lives in general.(example: when youre overworked and some tells you youre not Superman, ya know.)
