Top of the table today at Lark Hill Sportsplex between the Rockingham Sharks and the the mighty South perth lions. After a poor showing the week before, the boys from the den were keen to make amends with a spirited performance against the table topping sharkies. We knew it would be very tough covering for key players such as Charmand Braell but we were equal to the task. After a motivating speech from our interim coach Regan Kahu, we were pumped, hungry and ready to take the green. The game, as you would expect started fast, intense and extremely physical. The sharks were the first to cross the chalk, through none other than Wirihana, the lead was short lived though because in the ensuing set after the kickoff, possession was squandered by Rockingham and T-Mac Tamati Mcpherson, back playing in his favoured position of Dummy Half, split through the tough interior ruck defence of the sharks to chalk up 4 points. The pace of the game did not slow down one bit, after plenty of grind, countless penalties and tackle-after-tackle, the flood gates opened and the Black Mamba had himself a meat pie. The lions went into half time ahead, through the great defence of Ty Thorogood and Angus McFillin. Siailaoa Faafua put on an aerial exhibition, saving countless tries through his work in the air and under the high ball.not to be overlooked were our meat in the middle Taiapa Graham and Jared Spencer, Lee Heta and Lyric also provided a good platform for players like Tearahi Bishop, Ashlea Tunbridge and JT Jake Thomas to play off. In the second half, Rockingham drew first blood, but the heart of the lion beat all through Port Kennedy and the lions hit pay-dirt through first time centre Angus. A series of contriversial decisions both ways occured before Rockingham sealed the game with a try to Rakheem. -Even though the lions did not the dubz today, we showed that we still have that spark that carried us to the premiership in 2013. Credit to the Rockingham Sharks, they oozed class the entire match, they copped some heavy blows from the ref (as we all did), including Justin getting the sinbin, they weathered the storm and came out victors 20-18. As captain of South Perth Id like to say that Im so proud of my boys today, you rocked up with the right mind-set and achieved what we came to achieve and that was give it everything we had and if it wasnt enough well..it wasnt our day. Man Of The Match: Tie between T-Mac and Gus, both played incredibly well and tackled their hearts out.
