Top tips for enjoying the Games shooting at Barry Buddon In preparation for the Commonwealth Games shooting events at Barry Buddon British Shooting has published online a guide to the competition. The competition at the MoD training ground between Carnoustie and Monifieth features three disciplines of shooting - shotgun, rifle and pistol, and runs from today (Friday) until Tuesday. There will be 19 shooting events during that period. Each event proceeds in a ‘last man standing’ format with low scorers eliminated at set points until only the podium places remain. There are time limits imposed in each event to add pressure, for example in the 50m Rifle Prone athletes have to fire 14 shots on command in 30 seconds, while the 10m air rifle and pistol for men and women have 50 seconds. In the 50m Rifle finals the men and women must also compete in kneeling, prone and standing positions, again with a time restriction. Both the women’s 25m air pistol and the shotgun events have a two part final, a semi-final and two medal matches, with the top two battling it out for gold and silver and the third and fourth ranked shooters vying for the bronze. In the shotgun trap events the athletes proceed through a series of numbered stations shooting once at each, but in the semi-finals and finals progressively more complicated sequences of shots are required at stations. The shotgun skeet shooting semi-finals and medal stages consists of eight doubles and finalists have a particular sequence to follow to succeed.
