Top tips for school leavers A number of organisations exercise a ‘no under 18s’ policy for insurance reasons, making it difficult for school leavers to find work. Here at Adecco, we understand the importance of giving young people the best start to their careers. We also remember from our own experience just how challenging getting your foot on the career ladder can be. That’s why Adecco employs up to four work experience students aged 16-20 per branch, each year, for up to two weeks at a time. Follow our top ten tips for securing work experience at the company of your choice: 10 Top Tips for Securing Work Experience What do I want to be when I leave school? Think about your strengths, passions and interests and apply them to the workforce. If you have a passion for music, you may be able to turn that talent into working in a music shop, at the RTE, backstage at rock concerts, or with a chamber orchestra. Wish list Create a ‘wish list’ of the different types of jobs that you are interested in, and make a list of all of the companies in your local area that you would like to work for. Who do you know? Speak to teachers, tutors, family and friends to see if they know anyone who works for one of your target organisations, as they may be able to assist you. If you don’t have any existing contacts, research online for the relevant contacts within your chosen company. Build your CV All employers will ask for your CV. Speak to teachers, parents or friends for tips on how to build a CV, or contact a recruitment agency for their advice. A CV should include your contact details, achievements at school, hobbies and personal attributes. Making your move Some schools and colleges will approach organizations on your behalf. However, if your school or college does not offer this service, consider telephoning the companies on your wish list and ask to speak to someone about work experience opportunities. Alternatively, you may wish to go to the company in person and ask for the relevant contact at reception. And always take copies of your CV with you, as you may be asked to leave one behind. Dress to impress If you approach the company directly or are invited for an interview, remember to look the part. You should always dress in a smart and professional manner for any work experience role. Preparing for your first day Make sure you ask questions about your new work placement. Do you know how to get there? What time you should arrive? Who to ask for? Is there anything you need to bring with you? Keep an open mind Being enthusiastic, friendly, open and flexible will impress the company you are working for. You may be asked to do some tasks that are not as interesting as others, but remember to try your best with everything that is given to you. If you are unsure about anything, don’t be afraid to ask questions: asking questions is a sign of being proactive, interested and conscientious about your work. Feedback Remember to ask for written feedback so that you have something to show to future employers. Your school or college may be able to provide you with a feedback form. If they can’t, ask for feedback around competencies such as time management, communication, listening, following instructions, customer service and working with others. Follow up Once you have completed your work experience you should send the company a thank you letter or email. They have invested time and money to have you with them, so share your feedback and the experience you have had during your time with them. You never know, if a job opportunity comes up in the future, they just might call you!
