Topic: Why We Should Give! John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life”. What effect does giving have on us? The good news is that giving can often make you happier. It is no secret that altruism (unselfishness) can help us to feel good about ourselves and this is now backed up by MRI scans which show this “warm-glow effect” in the reward centers of the brain. Many scientist believe that we are “hard wired” to give. This is nothing new to many of us. We know that God has given us a “Naw-dee-baw” Mind in our soul, just like the one He has. This is the mind in our soul that gives. Experiments have been conducted in which a group of people are given money, and half of them are required to spend it on themselves while half are required to spend it on other people. Contrary to their own expectations, the half who spent the money on others consistently got more pleasure out of the experience than their non-altruistic colleagues. On a wider level, a 2010 study considered survey data from 136 countries to see whether people who answered yes to the question Have you donated money to charity in the last month? were happier overall. A clear correlation was found In 122 of the countries; in fact, on average it was found that donating to charity had a similar impact on happiness to household income doubling! The key to this is “not being pressured to donate”. Otherwise, the opposite effect is brought about. It brought a great joy to the Father to give us His Son, His Only Begotten Son! So, it stands to reason that those who give feel better than the one receiving. We have felt it: When you give someone a gift and you get the “Warm Glow Effect” So, give, today!
