Torbay Needs You – Yes You! Instead of shouting at the radio news or grumbling over your cornflakes at the newspaper headlines why not put your head above the parapet and stand for election. In May 2015 Torbay will elect a Mayor and 36 Councillors – could one of them be you? So long as you are over 18 years of age, not registered bankrupt, and reside within Torbay you are eligible to stand* If you agree the following statement – the preamble to the Liberal Democrat constitution – members of the local party in your community will be keen to support you and help you get elected, as I will. The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. We champion the freedom, dignity and well-being of individuals, we acknowledge and respect their right to freedom of conscience and their right to develop their talents to the full. We aim to disperse power, to foster diversity and to nurture creativity. We believe that the role of the state is to enable all citizens to attain these ideals, to contribute fully to their communities and to take part in the decisions which affect their lives. If you care about your community, our natural environment, the need for higher quality all year round jobs, and the need to protect the vulnerable in Torbay, you need to be putting your name forward for selection as a candidate and hopefully election as a Councillor. The earlier you do this the greater your chance of winning.
