Toronto Burningman Announcements, January 2015 Edition Table of Contents: 1. New Regional Contacts for Toronto 2. What the Heck is a regional Contact? 3. Firefly Art Grant Core Announcement 4. Upcoming Dates of Awesomeness. >>>>>>1. NEW REGIONAL CONTACTS FOR TORONTO. After years valiant service to Toronto, Little Jen and Laura Weller have stepped down from the position of Regional Contacts. The folks at BMorg decided that the only adequate replacement for these two awesome burners was three people: Rob Forward, Chriz North and Mountie. Wed like to give a special thanks to Laura. For those of you who dont know, Laura has given more than a decade worth of service in this position, helping a once fledgling community find its wings. Thanks for all your help and your time, Laura and Little Jen! >>>>>>2. WHAT THE HECK IS A REGIONAL CONTACT? The job description of an RC is highly relative to the region they’re working for. In Toronto the RC acts primarily as a representative for the Burning Man Organization. They’re goodwill ambassadors, facilitators, information distributers, and the folks who help others navigate the use of Burning Man’s trademarked Intellectual Property (IP). >>What a Regional Contact isn’t: Raver-Ninjas. We’re not. We would love to be, but we’re just not. The job description also doesn’t include party-throwing and event planning, but if we have the energy we certainly can and will get involved as event pARTicipants. What about BurnT? What’s their role in Toronto’s Burning Man community? BurnT helps run MooseMan and TComp and fund art projects there and beyond. Their job is to support the official events events. Contact them at burntbod@googlegroups. >>Who does run events, then? BurnT OUT Interactive Arts Society is the legal entity behind the local Burning Man community. BurnTs mission is the establishment and operation of a social society for individuals who want to participate in, collaborate on, and foster: creating sustainable community; promoting artistic expression, by way of events and projects; and through self-expression, mutual celebration, and self-reliance, in a manner that is fun, creative, respectful, responsible, and civic-minded. In practice, BurnT does this by facilitating two events per year: Mooseman, a summer camping event, held over the August long weekend; and a fall reunion event, usually held in November. BurnT is a registered non-profit which exists to provide umbrella operational support such as insurance, and is responsible for the financial aspects of the events so that no individual has to take on that risk. >>Burning Man’s IP. While we’re all focused on creating art and celebrating around burning effigies year-long, we’re not just a group of pyromaniac hippies: Burning Man prides itself on having a coherent and consistent style and ethos worldwide, which is intended to maintain the culture we all enjoy. To that end, they’ve empowered RCs to “sanction” any event to use their trademarks in their region as long as they adhere to the principles of Burning Man, and reach the standards of event safety. Things that fall into the IP of the BM Org include: Images of “The Man” (aka Burnie), the name “Burning Man” & “Decompression”. >>What’s so good about “Sancitoning” and event? As far as we can tell: name-brand recognition. That’s pretty well it. There are tons of great events in Toronto that have tangential connections to the Burning Man scene here, but don’t need anything involving Burning Man name to actually work: Santarchy, Bunnarchy, The German Sparkle Party, the successful explodey-burning art of Site 3 are just examples of that. What happens when someone uses the trademarks without permission? We send in the Raver-Ninjas. >>>>3. A NOTE FROM THE FIREFLY ART GRANT CORE For the uninitiated, Firefly is the New England Regional Event (based in Boston), and is generally considered one of the premiere events outside of TTITD and our very own Mooseman. Toronto has an active attendance in this upcoming event, with groups such as Totenkitten bringing adorable tyranny to our neighbours to the south. Further information can be found here: fireflyartscollective.org/ or from Seth Hardy, one of the tinpot tyrants behindTotenkitten as well as their fire-safety team lead, at [email protected] >>SAVE THE DATES: 2015 ART GRANT TIMELINE FOR FIREFLIES Its that time of year again when we all start thinking about what kind of art we might want to bring to the woods of Vermont this July! Art is a central part of Firefly, and the event wouldnt be the same without the wonderful pieces that have been brought to Bethel over the years. Bringing art is a great way to add a piece of yourself to the event and contribute/participate in a meaningful way. Because the timeline will be a bit different this year, we wanted to give everyone a heads up before officially opening up applications. There are five types of grants this year: - Creativity Grants: basic grants awarded in $100, $300, $500, and $700 tiers, for projects coming to Firefly Arts Festival - Legacy Grant: small grants to assist returning projects to Firefly. - Burner Exchange Grant: Mid-range grants to help transport art from other burns to Firefly (timeline still TBD!). - Lace Grants: which are awarded to spectacular, larger projects that will appear at both Firefly Arts Festival. - Temple Grant: A grant to build the Temple at Firefly Arts Festival.
