Toronto: Interpreter – Bengali, French, Somali Apply by: ASAP Commitment: Approximately 4 hours on September 15, 22 & October 6 Connect non-English speakers with nature! Hike Interpreters will provide verbal translation to participants at hikes in the Don Valley this fall. Participants will be guided through a variety of neighbourhoods and ecological sites, as part of Evergreen’s Nature and Heritage Hikes program. By providing interpretation, you’ll be better enabling community members to connect with nature in their backyard and to explore Toronto’s ecological and cultural history. What you bring: You’re fluent in spoken English as well as Bengali, French or Somali. You enjoy meeting new people and have strong communication skills. An interest in exploring the city on foot is an asset and you do need to be able to participate in hikes of up to 10 km. When and where: Hikes requiring interpreters are on September 15, September 22 and October 6, 9:30am to about 1 pm. Commit to at least 2, ideally all of the hikes. Hikes are in various locations in the lower Don Valley. Opportunities to support other community programs a possibility. How we’ll support you: You’ll receive an initial orientation to Evergreen and our hiking programs. You’ll receive ongoing support from Evergreen staff and will work in partnership with program leads. You’ll also get a key word list in advance to help you prepare for the hikes Perks: Good opportunity to work with the public, enjoy the outdoors, learn about nature and heritage while on the hikes, and meet new people, while building your skills. References available on request. Good to know: Hikes happen rain or shine, so please dress for the weather with appropriate hiking gear and closed-toe shoes.
