Toronto Star, VIA Rail shouldn’t give up freedom of movement in name of security, Aug. 7, 2013 "If Via Rail is trying to diminish its popularity, then its proposal for strict passenger security checks is a sure way to do it. What’s the next step in the fight against possible acts of terrorism – force TTC customers to get their shoes x-rayed before riding the Red Rocket? After all, terrorists have shown they can attack almost anywhere. In the scramble to appear security-conscious after the recent arrests in a suspected plot to derail a train, Via is considering extra scrutiny that risks making train travel more similar to the post 9/11 complications of boarding an airplane. The horror," the Toronto Star editorialized. "In its haste, Via seems to be ignoring the rather obvious fact that the alleged plot involved the detonation of train tracks – an apparent outside job that would not require a terrorist on board. If logic prevails, then Via security should investigate suspicious folks wandering around railway infrastructure instead," the Star editorial said. thestar/opinion/editorials/2013/08/07/via_rail_shouldnt_give_up_freedom_of_movement_in_name_of_security_editorial.html
