Total Lunar Eclipse Before sunrise next Tuesday, while most people are sound asleep, I will be up peering at the heavens, (with my camera) watching the total lunar eclipse. Known in some circles as a blood moon, a full lunar eclipse is when the entirety of the moon is shaded by Earth. In New Mexico the eclipse begins at 1:06 a.m. and ends at 2:24 a.m. MT According to an article in the Los Angeles Times, the phenomenon will be visible across almost the entire continental U.S., most of Canada and Central America and parts of South America. It’s called a red or blood moon because every time the moon passes completely into Earth’s shadow, it turns a reddish color. During a lunar eclipse, the red portion of the visible light spectrum gets bent as it passes through Earths atmosphere into Earths shadow, making the moon appear reddish in tint.
