The game is a turn based RTS with real time battles, and lets you play a large amount of different historical factions from the ancient world, all with their own unique roster of units and perks. There is plenty of DLC for the game, they range from new factions and units to completely new campaign maps. The game features a prologue campaign, it is meant as a short tutorial to get you ready for the Grand Campaign. The prologue puts you in the shoes of a roman general, it is set in a time where the Romans where still conquering the other city states of Italy.
