Totally surprised as I was referred to sit on the task force. :) Thank you God for the continued blessing to help our youth. I love my career! :) January 22, 2015 Ms. Kathy Johnson, Director of Workforce Programs Greater Phoenix Urban League Workforce Program Dear Kathy, REF: Personal Invitation to serve on the “Disconnected Youth, Board of Directors” This is a personal invitation for you to become a Member of the Board of Directors, where you will create Opportunities for Disconnected Youth. We have a wicked issue in our community and we need your help. There are over 180,000 youth between the ages of 16 and 24 in Arizona, who are not in school or employed (Measure of America 2012). Left unattended, the cost both to children and our community will leave scars for a lifetime affecting everything from earnings and financial dependency on public services. However, reducing the number of disconnected youth would generate more than $63 billion in Social Benefits and more than $21 billion in Fiscal Benefits to the state of Arizona1. Kathy, I am asking you join me in solving the wicked issue by attending the first Board of Director’s meeting on February 12, 2015, and becoming a Member of the “Opportunities for Youth Board of Directors”. The major responsibilities of the Board of Directors are: • Guidance, Vision and Oversight: Develop a Common Agenda for change, including goals and guiding principles; Use data to inform strategy development and learning; Track progress using agreed upon indicators; ensure effective communication and reduce redundancy of efforts; guide work of the Backbone entity. • Leadership: Serve as a vocal champion of the collective impact effort on reducing the number of Disconnected Youth. Leverage your organization and those in your network to achieve the Common Agenda; • Process: Participate in-person in regularly scheduled meetings (every 8 to12 weeks) and commit to a multi-year membership on the Board of Directors. • Select and Guide the work of a “Backbone Organization”: A group with the Capacity to support the common goals; Mirrors the geographic footprint of the partnership; Connect across levels—neighborhoods; Connect and be respected by leaders and coalitions; Convene stakeholders across sectors, systems, levels, related coalitions, provider networks; Focus on accountability; Use data for decision making; etc. Kathy, this is a great opportunity for your organization to increase its’ impact to our community through a collective impact approach. Your leadership and knowledge would be added value, not only from a social and fiscal cost benefit, but also a significant return on investment through the success of our youth, workforce, and community.
